After being captured by the Geonosians and convicted of espionage, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala are sentenced to execution in the arena. Each of the captives is chained to a stone pillar, intended to die by tooth or claw as a trio of deadly predators are released, prodded to attack by Geonosian handlers. Thousands upon thousands of Geonosian onlookers cheer in anticipation of the blood sport, waiting for Poggle the Lesser and Count Dooku, the Sith Lord, to give the command to kill their prisoners.
As the gates are raised and the creatures are unleashed into the arena, the witting captives are able to free themselves from their bonds enough to defend against the ferocious beasts. Padmé climbs atop her pillar to escape the reach of the vicious nexu. The agile beast is able to climb the bare rock pillar with its deadly claws, and once within reach, it begins snapping at her with its razor-toothed maw. Using her chains and shackles to stun the nexu, her agility and quick thinking save her from what would have otherwise been a deadly attack. The nexu's claws rake Padmé's back as the beast falls away, but Padmé is temporarily safe and takes the moment to study the arena, which has quickly become a battlefield.
