Evil Palpatine

Soon after Episode II: Attack of the Clones was released and the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine figure was released, I started to think about what we were going to see in Episode III. I knew it was supposed to be three more years after the events of AOTC, during which time the Clone Wars would escalate. As the secret orchestrator of the Clone Wars, I figured Palpatine would continue to subtly wield Dark Side powers, but that he might have to use them more overtly in order to make sure the war was going the way he wanted. So, I decided to arrempt a custom that showed Palpatine aging rapidly. My inspiration was actually pretty benign--Jimmy Carter! Carter looked great going into his presidency, but his four years in office left him looking like he'd aged a decade. With Palpatine, I also wanted to suggest that his aging was due to the malignant nature of the Dark Side. I made his skin jaundiced, made his eyes more sunken, and gave him more wrinkles. As for his costume, I figured he'd be moving to a more overtly Sith look as he continues to cement his grip on the galaxy. I painted his costume a licorice black, then added silver trim. I made his hair whiter, and started him on the way to those yellowish eyes seen in ROTJ. It's an unsettling look, but still not the spectre we will all come know and loathe! Of course, based on photos released from the set, we now know that, apart from shorter hair, Palpatine won't really look all that much different in Episode III ... at least, not until the end!
