As with other issues of the Tales of the Jedi series, the first page is a "opening crawl" describing the events, briefly, from the previous issue.
Thousands of Jedi from all over the galaxy converge on the red planet Deneba, to discuss the problems occurring elsewhere. Master Arca and his Jedi, Ulic Qel-Droma, still healing from his Sith inflicted wounds above Koros Major, Nomi Sunrider and her daughter, Vima listen to Odan-Urr, the spokesman for the assembled Jedi. When Master Thon asks Arca about Master Baas, Arca informs him that Baas has been going through a rough time lately, having one of his students leave him and all.
That student, Exar Kun, is currently exploring the Sith ruins on Korriban for some information on the dark side and the ancient Sith masters. He fights his way through the temple guardian spirits into the Great Temple as instructed by the spirit of Freedon Nadd. Unfortunately he awakens something there that has slept a long time, and the mouth of the temple collapses, leaving him only one way to go.
Nomi and Ulic address the assembled masses and relate their version of the events in the Empress Teta system. The Jedi woman Shayoto speaks to Ulic and the assembly of the past, the Vultar Cataclysm and the Hundred-Year Darkness. She warns of allowing the Sith to return. Ulic agrees and insists that a Jedi should infiltrate the Krath. Master Arca disagrees with this choice, choosing to live only in the light.
Back on Korriban, Exar Kun has found a secret room that contains a crystal which houses defeated Jedi Masters. Freedon Nadd's spirit causes an avalanche that shatters the crystal and Exar's bones. Nadd insists that if he just surrender to the Dark Side, he will be allowed to live.
While aboard his starship, Master Vodo-Siosk Baas feels the pain of his former student, but when he reaches out to help him, a dark force lashes out at him. Weakly Kun accepts the terms from Freedon Nadd and is healed and remade in the form of the Dark Side, a Sith emblem branded on his forehead. Jedi on Deneba as well as Master Baas feel the agony of Kun's scream across the galaxy.
At that moment a Tetan corsair unleashes a barrage of firepower on the assembled Jedi on Deneba, while modified war droids within the meeting reveal themselves and attack the Jedi. While many Jedi fight with their lightsabers, Master Arca uses the Force to destroy the droids from within. But while saving Ulic's life, a lone assassin droid fires an arrow through Arca. He collapses into his students arms, dying.
Exar Kun may have given into the dark side, but he claims to not be a part of that side of the Force. Nadd relates tales of Naga Sadow and his followers living on the moon of Yavin IV, while the panther like shapes of the temple guardians surround him. Wrenching his lightsaber from his grip, Nadd forces Kun to unleash his anger to kill the beasts and save himself, thus cementing his path.
Surrounded by his grief, Ulic decides to pursue the Krath and infiltrate their numbers against Nomi's pleadings. He vows to take revenge for the killing of his master and all the other Jedi on Deneba that day.
