Questions for April 10, 2000

1
I have a different sort of question. I am a biochemist, and I was curious if George Lucas was making a link between the mitochondria of human cells and the mitichlorians of the Jedi cells. As stated in the movie, mitichlorians are in all living cells, they are a microscopic life form, and they form a symbiot circle without which they (lifeforme in the movie) could not live. This is just like the human mitochondria. they are microscopic lifeforms (possibly ancient bacteria) that have formed a symbiot circle with human cells (eukaryotic cells), and with out them lifeforms on the planet could not live because they make our energy (ATP). Anyway do you think that there is some sort of link?

Lucas stated in a few interviews that Midichlorians are more or less derived from Mitochondria as far as the concept goes... save for the magical universe-bending powers.

Is the chain aound the 3 3/4" Chewbacca as Boush's Bounty's neck removable?
  -Heather

Yes, but only once.

I read on some web page (it may have been rebelscum) about there being 3 Darth Sidious figures. I know of the one from May 3rd last year and Holo Sidious. What is the other one?
  -Rich

I only know of 2.

I was all excited about visiting Wal-Mart the next day [after the video] and to my surprise NOTHING! Any truth to all of these boxes that were not to be open until April 4th?
  -Tim

Apparently not. :) Some stores told people this because they assumed they would be getting goodies for the video release, and while some did, it would seem that those are a minority.

Hi Adam. I realize that Hasbro action figures are designed by American toy designers, but are they actually manufactured in China, Taiwan, or someplace like that, like so many other toys sold in the U.S.? Just curious...

That's about right, yeah.

Why has the POTF2 line slowed down soooo much? Also, I heard the Jek wave is coming out in July! Is this true or is that wave going to come out some time sooner?
  -FettFan Mike

First: no one, Hasbro included, has any idea when these will show up in your area. Due to slow shipping, and the fact that a lot of people just miss these things, it could show up pretty much whenever.

Why did the line slow down? Ummm... have you seen the clearance sales? :) Something's up.

Do you think there is a possibility Hasbro could suprise us with a new Queen Amidala this year? They already suprised us with Plo Koon.
  -daisy1077

Hasbro has never showed a complete year's offerings at Toy Fair for Star Wars, so yes, it's entirely possible we might see a new version of the Queen or one of her handmaidens (aside from Sabe). But remember, this means we could see ANYTHING-- the year's only four months old.

What's in the Lego pod race bucket? Is it components of specific pods from the film, or is it just a mish-mash of random parts for generic racers?
  -ORBLES3

I have yet to see pictures of this set, so in all fairness, I can't say.

I have aquired quite a bit of promotional material from local stores for Episode 1. Most of the material is cardboard. Do you recommend any protective coating that will slow or stop the eventual fading of the cardboard? Thanks alot!
  -Travis

I have my doubts that most of this stuff will be in demand down the road, but then again, I'm sure I would have said the same thing in 1978 about ANH release.

Other then the "just keep 'em out of the light", there's not much I'd say.

I only buy one of each of most Star Wars toys, and I always take them out of the boxes (otherwise, what's the point). I do, however, save the boxes/packaging for everything (I have filled my attic). Am I just wasting space or will having the packaging, even opened, add to the value of my toys in the distant future? Not that I'm planning on selling them ever, but I was just wondering.
  -Trowfaz

Locally, POTF2 is so common carded that loose figures are roughly the same price as packaged stuff. Your average collector store may charge $15 for a POTF2 Fett MOMC, but $10 or $12 unpackaged because, well, the MOMC ones aren't that hard to get.

Right now, I'd go with "not likely." Since there's just so much of this stuff in attics waiting to fail to pay for someone's kid's college fund, it seems unlikely. In many toy lines-- "real" toy lines, might be a better word-- a box will make all the difference. But new Star Wars is probably going to be a notable exception.
