Week Two... FIGHT!
1 What were the dark and light sides of the force called in early versions of the script? -Liz
Ah, an attempt at a stumper. When it comes to Star Wars Trivia, no one
knows more about Star Wars and is more trivial than I. The answer to
your question (which, if you're looking for further proof, can be found
in The Adventures of Starkiller script, Behind the Magic, and a few
other places) is a bit odd, and to a small extent, is touched upon by
Episode One. The bad guys were originally known as the Knights of the
Sith, Black Knights of the Sith, or Legions of Lettow. As far as the protagonists go, Jedi Bendu of Ashla, Bendu Jedi, and others were thrown around.
While the Starkiller script is generally accepted as an early draft of A New Hope, I'm pretty sure LucasFilm has yet to comment on its authenticity. Since it's been around for a long time and at least some of it jives with the information from Behind the Magic, well, that's good enough for me. :)
And just for an added bonus: the infamous Episode Three: Fall of the Republic script you may have seen is fanfic. In other words, a phony, and somewhat nifty, fan-written look at Episode Three from the early 1980s. It's not the real deal.
2 & 2.5 What's with 'Jedi Master Points'? Any hint as to what we're saving all these for? -zeon
Do you have any information on what the Jedi Master Points POP will be for? How about the box of POTF POPs that I have been saving, will there be any more mail away figures that these will be good for? I hope I have not been cutting these out in vain.
Well, I've searched everywhere from my home town to the far reaches of Doane, Nebraska and have yet to find any indication of what these will be used for. At the Star Wars Celebration in Denver, Hasbro made it clear that they would not be using them for anything through the end of the year... so for now, I guess it's anybody's guess as to the use of the points. I'm hoping for mail-in figures or something cool, but time will tell. As to your old UPCs/POPs... well, let's just say I'm glad I managed to use most of mine during the Mace Windu offer. Since Hasbro has changed the look of the POP, and generally requests receipts dated from a certain time, odds are the older points will be worthless. I wouldn't throw them out just yet... but I wouldn't hold my breath for an offer where I could use them.
3 Heya Adam! ..After spending 5 minutes cleaning up my drool after seeing the new pic of the 'Super Articulated' Stormtrooper, what might the chances be of him finding a way into an entire CASE of his own? ..I for one would buy 1, maybe 2 dozen of those cases..... For 'display' puroposes, of course...wouldn't think about 'invading' anyplace...inparticular..heh heh :) -SWFigClltr Great minds think alike. :) Hasbro has never introduced a figure in an assortment of its own, but did a few solid-packed cases of just one character in 1997. While I, you, and odds are the few thousand people who have seen the Q&A page since its introduction a week ago would pick up a box of 12-16 Troops, it's unlikely such a case will be made available. I know I want at least a dozen of these guys. Hasbro's really doing nice work with these new waves. Of course, now I almost regret buying those 20 POTF2 Stormtroopers last December at $1 each... almost. :)
4 When is Hasbro's Episode One site going to be backup? -JnySpcCmdr5 Well, after an all-too-brief sneak preview on Friday (which I missed, I sleep through most of the mornings) Hasbro mentioned it should be back some time soon, most likely this week.
5 Are headcheese sandwiches good snacks for a trilogy viewing party? -Carmody Not nearly as good as frozen waffles and kiwi juice.
6 I called Meijer's up here in Columbus Ohio, and I asked about the new figures(YODA MAUL-2) and they said they had collection 3. what would they be referring too? -Drew Star Wars Episode One figures are split in to three assortments called Collection 1, Collection 2, and Collection 3. Collection 2 has semi-major characters like Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Ric Olie. Collection 1 has Maul in his various forms, Obi-Wan, Amidiala, Anakin, and the major characters. Collection 3 is basically the assortment of characters aimed at collectors, like Chancellor Valorum, Gasgano, OOM-9, and Captain Tarpals. So far, I think Collection 3 has the potential to be the better of the three... hey, I dig minor characters. Gimme a Mars Guo before Qui-Gon #27 anyday. :)
7 What is with Padme's left foot? She can hardly stand with it. I thought I got a defective figure but when I looked at the other Padmes in the stores they all have the same foot. Is this a factory defect or what? -Raul There's a problem? (Runs to toy stash, pulls out Padme.) Well, she's right next to the screen as I type this, and she's standing just fine. Her left foot was molded at an angle to look like she's walking, rather than the usual flat-foot sculpt. I think they did this on at least one of the various Catwoman figures from the Batman range as well. The figure should stand just fine if you have the part of her foot with the hole flat against the surface she's standing on, but if there's still a problem, it's time to invest in some action figure stands. US Forces makes small, black plastic disc stands for figures (each holds one figure) called Action Stands. Those are a few bucks for five stands, available at Entertainment Earth. P&P Products makes longer, rectangular stands that hold five to eight figures at their site, (http://www.pandp-products.com). Both are pretty cool and work rather well.
But if you position Padme's feet properly, she'll probably stand on her own.
8 In the latest Action Figure News and Toy Review (on page 59), the magazine mentions a "European Exclusive Battle Droid" that replaces the Commtech chip on figures from "Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Polland." I knew this was done on figures in Taiwan.
My question is, is this "European Exclusive" Battle Droid different than the ones from Taiwan or is the magazine wrong and there isn't a European Exclusive? I was under the impression that the Battle Droid that replaces the CommTech chip was the same for everyone. This limited-articulation version of the character is offered in markets where localized CommTech chips are not available. Of course, I still haven't seen one in person, so hey, whaddo I know? :) The Battle Droid version of Episode One figures has yet to show up overseas in any great numbers, so odds are we'll have a laundry list of countries with this figure available in the coming weeks. But yeah, any nation's game for this sort of thing, it is not a European exclusive.
9 Hasbro's release list for 2000 is as of yet unknown. While there will be a Qui-Gon with Eopie beast pack and many other new items, the exact rundown is as of yet unknown. (But between you and me, Shmi's supposed to be pretty high on the list for next year.)
10 While I haven't tried it first-hand, a friend of mine at a local sci-fi store says he got a Spanish Darth Maul and it works fine on a US CommTech reader.
FIN Keep those questions rolling in, next update: Wednesday morning.
Questions for July 14, 1999
1 & 1.5
Why is Hasbro intent on making figuers of the same figures over and over?? I mean, how many Lukes Leias and Vaders can they do? when canwe expect amanamman or something new in the classicassortmetns for once?
I really like these questions, because I really don't have to write an answer in this space.
2 Hi.When are the new Collection 1 figures coming out? -Graham If you mean Qui-Gon (Naboo) and friends, they've been out for a while. Wal-Mart seems to have gotten the most cases of them so far, and they continue to show up constantly. By the way, in case you wandered in to Q&A through a link bypassing the main page, we do have a very nice news area there. It's really good.
3 Have the 2 new POTF2 cinema scenes (Skiff Guards, Rebel Pilots) been spotted in the USA yet? -Matt Well, one collector says he got Skiff Guards from a mail-order store at a pretty high price just this week. I have yet to see them, but I look forward to their appearance in stores-- these guys rock!
4 On Hasbro's new site it said many of the figures are out, (R2-D2 w/Leia, Greedo, ect.) and yet I have not seen them (Suprise, I've only seen the first 3 waves and the Naboo Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi) or heard about them being out on Rebelscum or Yakface.com! Whats the deal? -Charles They (the new Classic guys and Episode One beyond Wave 6) aren't out as of now... if they are, none of us have seen them at a retail level yet. But a few people say they found a Naboo Anakin, although nobody seems scared up a good shot of a packaged one as of the time I write this. Of course, it's late, and I might have forgotten seeing it...
5 I have overheard a Hasbro rep saying that they will be "retiring" X number of figures every so often. (overheard was Padme, Ric Olie ans a couple of others aka pegwarming figs). Can you use your powers over the weakminded (Hasbro) and find out any info for we the viewing public. And what would be your take on this if true. I am not planning on runnig out and grabbing every Padme I see ( quite frankly I'd have to mortgage my house again to do that) but this woiuld open some room in case for new issue figures, so that there would be more new figs in the case an less shelf warming material. -Deron Hasbro doesn't "retire" its Star Wars figures, really-- characters are cycled in and out of assortments based on sales and popularity. Right now, Ric Olie is peg warmin' poison. But when these sell, and if demand is still there, we might see him ship again. You never know. There is a history of this-- remember Han Hoth and Dagobah Luke? Lots of buzz was around that they were either picked up by or sent back to Hasbro/Kenner after warming pegs for months. But if it's true that Hasbro is taking some back... well, that's a horse of a different color, ain't it? Wait an' see, but even if a figure is cycled out of assortments for good, it's a safe bet you can pick it up somewhere. That's why someone invented the toy area of drug stores.
6 Hey Adam! Do you know when there will be pics of the new potf2 vehicles? -Ikabel Gont Yes. November 27, 9:12 AM EST on this very page. In other words, please keep checking out Hasbro's Star Wars site (or their new site, whichever one happens to be up), toy magazines, and of course, the amazingly amazing Rebelscum.com for info and pics when available.
7 When can we expect to see a big playset of classic trilogy places, and Episode 1 playsets? -lizzy
Well, it looks good for Episode One. With at least two Naboo playsets
on the way and a giant Royal Starship, odds are the only thing that
would prevent more Prequel toys of this nature would be poor sales of
the items we're already getting. As far as Classic stuff, I want a
big-honking Bespin Freezing Chamber playset as much as the next guy, if
not more. (I loved that scene). Heck, a nice big friendly Mos Espa
or Mos Eisley would be nice too. Hasbro's
releasing of new classic vehicles gives some hope for new playsets, but
there's nothing official yet.
8 I just picked up a Destroyer Droid today. Does this thing have the ability to fold up into ball form, and if so, how? I don't want to break it (even though it only cost $3.99 at Kroger), but would like to fold it up if possible. Has anybody done it successfully yet? -Thomas I played with one belonging to a friend of mine (I don't have one yet, grumble), and I can safely say that it didn't turn into a ball. There's always a chance Hasbro will make one, or some ingenious customizer will find an easy way to make it happen, but as of now... it doesn't look good. It'd rock, though. But back up a bit. You got it for four bucks? Congratulations! That's a real steal!
9 Last time I asked, they told me "We have no plans of offering such an item at this time." I think it's a shame, personally-- these things could sell for $50 or so, easy. If ever there was a good idea for a Fan Club Exclusive, this would be it.
10 My guess? Nobody cares. No, really. With POTF2, variations took off when there were long periods of nothing coming out. Now, there's too much new stuff, and variations (especially this one) are getting less interesting to a lot of collectors when there are new figures like Yoda and Darth Maul (Tatooine) to look for instead. Well, people are going bonkers looking for Yoda with Episode One lettering on it, but the figure doesn't exist. So remember, there is no rare variation of Yoda... at least not yet. (Considering how many of the ones sans E1 are out there, the fix could be tough. Hey, I'm just saying you never know.)
FIN
1 Does Hasbro make public the number of each figure it produces? -Brian
Not as such.
2 The petition for Wuher seems to have worked. Is there one for ROTJ Jabba? -PMarzo Nope. At least not yet-- I think a lot of collectors (not all, of course) were satisfied with the Jabba Glob version... at least for now. With almost a decade to go for new Star Wars toys, I think it's a safe bet a ROJ Jabba could be thrown in there somewhere... but you never know with Hasbro. If you haven't bought a Jabba Glob, I suggest you do. A friend of mine managed to launch the glob accross the room... it was cool.
3 Do you know of any plans for Amanaman, Ephant Mon or Squid Head? -Pedro No on all three. Squid Head made it to the rumor mill as "confirmed" a while back, but I think that was due to an accident.
4 Can you give us a number on how many figures HASBRO has planned for 1999? -Joe-B-Wan
Here's the breakdown: A few others could sneak out this year, but hey, when it comes to Hasbro, they love to surprise. (Hey, they got the last few batches of Episode One out a little early, eh?)
5 What exactly is the difference between a .00 and a .0000 on the back of the action figures? If they're both used to indicated a first run, what's the difference between them, if any? -Allison
A two-digit designation (.00, .01) was used up to around 1999, and starting 1999 Hasbro shifted to a four-digit part suffix (i.e., .0000, .0200, whatever).
6 When will we see a new POTF2 Boba Fett resculpt? -TKTULLIS Always a popular question. Hasbro, to my recollection, hasn't announced if, let alone when such a figure would be made. I'm hopeful, but hey, who knows?
7 Are you going to see "The Blair Witch Project"? -Ooby-Doob Kenooby No.
8 will we ever see the "other half" of some of the classic 12" exclusives? For example I need a tuan tuan, wampa, Bib Fortuna, Death Star gunner,Han in storm trooper etc. -Don Not the last time I asked. At one point Bib & the DS Gunner were listed as being in the assortment last year that had Jedi Luke and the Emperor in it... but we got the Barquin and another Chewie in it instead.
9 Not yet. I think a Pit Droid set would be cool... or a mail-in set or something. But Hasbro has no plans for such an item that we know of.
10 They're real, that's for sure. Weird... they remind me of an X-Men line I read about a few years ago, from England I think. Never did hear if they got made...
