Questions for December 13, 1999

1
I was just wondering if there are going to be many more (if any) vehicles in the POTF 2 line? Because i know many of the collectors i talk with are much more interested in seeing new playsets and vehicles like a new Death Star Playset, or a realisic Hoth Base than a flash speeder or especially a podracer....
  -Matt

More? Sure. The Tatooine Skiff and Y-Wing Fighter are sure-things for 2000, with a widely rumored but as of yet unconfirmed B-Wing. As far as playsets, I doubt we'll be blessed with more of those... especially really good ones. Vintage Hoth playsets-- especially the Imperial Attack Base-- can be found cheaper than many would expect. If you find one, spend an afternoon cleaning it up and odds are you'll end up with a toy better than any POTF2 set that would see production.

Do you happen to know if the Power "Gonk" Droid happens to fit in the "Droid Branding Device" included with the 8D8 figure?
  -Mike

I've had mine set up like the scene from ROJ, and it looks fine to me.

I have been told twice in the last week by people at my local TRU that they will no longer receive new Star Wars toys. Is this true?
  -Matt

Yes. Toys "R" Us is going to drop one of the more successful action figure brands.

No, of course not. Someone else wrote in stating he heard Wal-Mart was dropping all Hasbro products. Guys, when an employee tells you something that sounds outlandish, it's usually worth noting that these guys hear a lot of stuff after we (the netizens) do, and a lot of them really don't know and don't care. Not all of them, mind you-- there's more than a few realy great guys that work at TRU (here's looking at you, Ryan & Zob)... but my experiences has been that I have gotten comments SO ridiculous that you'd assume I was making them up. Did you know the entire POTF2 line was a Wal-Mart exclusive? Me neither.

I have been attempting to locate information about the Star Wars convention. I don't know if there are more than one or not. I know that there was one in Denver (perhaps this is the big one) this year? Will there be one in 2000?
  -Gary

There is no "official" con this year, but watch Rebelscum's news page for blurbs on upcoming local conventions. (Many of which can be much better than official ones.)

In Episode 1, is the actress playing Amidala's decoy actually Natalie Portman? It's another actress right? Portman is not playing two roles. My friend thinks otherwise.
  -Arthur

Yup, there's a different actress-- but she looks INCREDIBLY similar to Portman, it's not surprising many were fooled.

I visit your site frequently and often find that Q & A is only posted once or twice a week. Have the days changed from M W F?
  -William

It is three times a week, but I decided I didn't want to do it because, unfortunately, I was unable to make time to make updates for about ten days.

When the Star Wars Trilogy SE soundtracks were released a couple of years ago, I was surprised to see that they have almost all the music that showed up in the movie in chronological order. Are there any plans to release "The Phantom Menace" soundtrack in the same format as the Special Editions?
  -David

Doesn't look that way, unfortunately... I liked the SE CDs so much, I passed on the TPM soundtrack because it looked pathetic in comparison. If LFL or someone is reading, I would buy a 2 CD set with real liner notes and/or alternate takes in a heartbeat.

The other day I saw the new pics on a web site of the Obi-Wan (Jedi Knight) Darth Maul (Sith Lord) and Anakin (Naboo Pilot) and noticed they have the same old rectangular commtech chips. I seem to recall somewhere seeing an early shot of the Obi-Wan with the new style chip. What's going on?
  -Dan

That wave, henceforth known as the "Hasbro sucks" wave because they are so incredibly boring, still uses the original CommTech designs. The new chips will be used on later figures, and as of today, old figures will NOT be reissued with new chips-- the Obi-Wan was a mock-up ala the Buff-Luke on the Flashback card that surfaced last year.

Do you think Hasbro would have had more success with the EP1 line if they had a better original assortment of figures on May 3rd rather than what ultimately came out?
  -Michael

Hard to say. I think they had too much product out... many people weren't ready for or even interested in what they saw, they just bought it. Better figures, or at least more familliar faces (R2-D2 & Yoda) could've helped a bit, but ultimately it would've been about the same. What we're seeing is a result of too much product on the market at once, something that resulted in the cancellation of a whole bunch of product in 1998.

Adam, a while ago I wrote asking when the good people of western Pennsylvania would find the rebel pilot and skiff guards scenes, and the new vader, stormtrooper and r2d2 in stores. I have yet to find them, also it seems as though western PA is the last to find the new products, is this true?
  -Jeditronzo

I guess you figgered it out. Hasbro & West Pennsylvanian retaillers have been conspiring for years to make sure that you cannot find new product. They decided they had enough money, and are going out of their way to make absolutely sure that this one area of the United States cannot find these toys.

Sheesh. I haven't even seen those in stores yet. And for my friends that read this who know how often I go to toy stores, well, you know the deal. Some toys are just super hard to find, or so new that they haven't hit all stores yet. Patience... if you can't find them, the Fan Club will have them for 150% retail soon enough.

Ah, winter. The greatest time of year-- it's too cold to go anywhere, and when you get there the aisles are packed with angry folk who think you're there to snatch toys from children. At least it's only a few weeks until it's over.

Oh, good news for alla you Spuds out there-- a 4-CD DEVO Anthology box set is coming from Rhino next March, with two discs being slated as unreleased tracks (according to the fine folk over at Planet Earth. Rhino's page has it slated for March 14... a date that should hold at least some significance to the die-hard Star Wars fan.
