Originally constructed to protect Imperial convoys from the lightning raids launched by Rebel snub fighters, the Nebulon-B escort frigate soon became common on both sides of the conflict. Imperial defections and a series of important victories brought several of these powerful capital ships into the Rebel fleet. In Rebel hands, the Nebulon-B served many roles, from hospital ship to planetary assault.
