Tony D. Interviews Jennifer Donahoe 1997

For several months I've been visiting with Tony D. who is an artist and was at the San Diego Comic Con doing a signing. He was able to visit with some Kenner people at the show and he was kind enough to send me his interview. Enjoy it.

Tony: I talked with Wayne, who works on the JP line, Aaron, who handles Batman and Jennifer, who works on the SW line and answers most of the e-mails directed at the site. They were barraged by zillions of questions but found time to answer my few. Although we conversed on many of the other lines (I collect JP and Batman animated) the SW stuff is what was the subject of the day (and the only one I took notes on!)

Q:Okay, I noticed the Rebel Fleet Trooper was a bit larger than the other existing figs, are we gonna see a scale change here?
A:No, the RF Trooper was done by an outside sculptor and sometimes they don't quite adhere exactly to the size dimensions given in the spec sheet.

Q:The quality of the craftsmanship in the face sculpts is just getting incredible, will we see re-dos of Tatooine Luke and the original Leia? Either as separate blister packs or as part of a set?
A:It is quite possible that these 2 figs in particular will be re-done, as to how they are released is not for certain as of yet...

Q:I saw on the Internet that there will be a shift from the green to the blue packaging next year?
A:No, that is a rumor.

Q:And will there always be holograms on the packaging?
A:As far as I know, yes.

Q:Okay, on the Cantina Showdown, is Ponda Babba's arm gonna come off or what? I mean you’ve got Bespin Luke with removable hand...
A:(smiling) we thought of it afterwards about having his arm be removable. At fist they (Kenner) were not too sure about even the Luke with removable hand, but everyone really seems to like it once it was done.

Q:The new Collection numbers, what do they mean?
A:Collection #1 - Rebel Assortment; Collection #2 - Droids, Aliens Assortment; Collection #3 - Galactic Empire Assortment

Q:How about the Ewok 2-pack, is it gonna happen soon?
A:It is safe to say that they will be released in the future.

Q:Okay, will the A-Wing pilot. AT-AT Driver or Veers be released separately? Or will they only be available packaged with their ship?
A:Some of those figs may be available separately, but not all of them.

Q:Wedge? What's up with Wedge? Alot of folks on the Internet are unhappy with what he looks like...
A:A separate company, Hasbro New Ventures, handled the sculpt of the Wedge fig, so it wasn't really done through the usual departments. The final fig will look pretty much like the ToyFair photos. Alot of us here were kinda unhappy about him as well...

Q:Allright now, the Bo'Marr Monk, have you guys ironed the details on this guy yet or what? I mean he is awesome looking! like a little model!
A:(smiling) yes we are really pleased with how he came out. I (Jennifer) really like the liquid his brain floats in ( I asked her what the liquid was-resin? no just paint). What we are gonna do is, in August, have a downloadable order form on the site that you can print out and send to a company that will process and handle the orders. We will also have ads in various magazines as well- we really want everybody, computer or no computer, to be able to order them. Them?!! yes, you will be able to order as many as you like.

Comment:Homer Simpson: WOOHOOO!!!
Q:Will the Monk ever be available otherwise, like on a blister pack?
A:No, the packaging is too tricky, as it is you will have to pop his legs into his body. (they are ball-n-socket like the Probe Droid)

Q:Will the SW Fan Club have an exclusive fig next year as well?
A:That is quite possible.

Q:On a general note, how many cases of figs sell? Can we get an approximate number?
A:I can guarantee it is millions and millions of cases.

Q:You guys did a great step-by-step of the origination of the figs on your web-site, but how about actual production - are they machine made or hand made?
A:The are all hand assembled and hand-painted. You have one person who just paints eyes all day long.

Q:Speaking of your web-site, how do you feel about the other fan based sites?
A:We try to check them out from time to time (when we have time!) to see what's going on. I try to dispel any rumors floating around out there. I don't know where some people get this stuff.

Q:How do you feel about other sites getting images up before you guys?
A:If they are our officially released promo photos, it's no problem. We don't really like having the prototypes posted though as we don’t want people mis-informed that the final fig will look like that. Protos are just not meant for the public, they are more for the company’s eyes only.

Q:Okay, a theory here: My guess is that the exclusive figs made were figs nixed off the list of final figs to be released- true?
A:Not at all, most of the exclusives were thought up by the companies we did them for. For instance, the SW fan Club asked for the Cantina Band Member as it’s exclusive for this year. Again, the factor of packaging also comes into play in the decision as well.

Q:Is it a safe bet that all the figs made in the old line (70's-80's) will be remade into the new line?
A:No, the TRU classic pack did not go over too well-

Q:What I meant was will they be re-sculpted?
A:Oh, it is possible, but we are only scheduled through to 1998 as of now.

Q:How do you guys feel about product being bought “en masse” and being resold for outrageous prices? (like here at the con!)
A:We really do not approve of it and try to discourage it. If you notice, the new waves are packed with figs from the previous wave - so if you missed a fig from that wave, then he should be (hopefully) easier to get now.

Q:Ratio-wise, is the craze for buying figs the same or bigger than it was in the 70's?
A:Much, much bigger - right now it is an incredible phenomenon, because we are selling to the adults who were kids in the 70's and to a whole new generation of kids who are seeing the movies for the first time.
