Welcome, Rebelscum readers! Today we’ll be doing a timeline breakdown of one of the key Legends comic book series, Star Wars: Legacy. The comic series debuted 2006 from Dark Horse comics and ran for 50 issues, with the subsequent series Star Wars: Legacy- War concluding the central character arcs in 2011. A sequel series, Star Wars: Legacy Volume 2 was launched in 2013, but was cancelled a year later when Disney purchased Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics took over Star Wars comics.

Legacy goes further into the future of the timeline than any other piece of Star Wars media. The series takes place from 130-138 A.B.Y. (After the Battle of Yavin), meaning it takes place over 100 years after A New Hope. As a result, most of the core Legends characters introduced post-Return of the Jedi are presumed dead by the time of Legacy, with Luke Skywalker even appearing as a Force Ghost.

Let’s take a look at the key connections between Legacy and the rest of Star Wars canon. Like most of the Star Wars media released prior to the release of The Force Awakens that takes place after Return of the Jedi, the Legacy comics are part of the Legends timeline and have not been brought into the new canon out of fears of contradicting with the sequel trilogy. However, there are significant connections between Legacy and other Legends material.

Crossover Events

Many characters that appear in Legacy have popped up before. Here are some of the most significant crossovers.
A’Sharad Hett/Darth Krayt: The most obvious example, the Tusken Raider Jedi was introduced in Dark Horse Comics’ Republic series, where he trained under Ki-Adi-Mundi and became an ally of Anakin Skywalker. Hett managed to survive Order 66, but turned to the dark side and became the Dark Lord of the Sith.
The Yuuzhan Vong War: The invasion of the organic alien species the Yuuzhan Vong, a race that originated outside of the galaxy, was one of the major storylines in Star Wars novels. Nineteen Star Wars books released between 1999 and 2003 in The New Jedi Order series starred characters like Jacen, Jania, and Anakin Solo (who is killed in the series), concluding in 29 ABY. The effects of the Yuuzhan Vong are felt throughout Legacy, as the Galactic Alliance and Imperial Remnant aim to rebuild planets devastated by the attacks. Yuuzhan Vong characters appear, including those that torture A’Sharad Hett prior to his transformation into Darth Krayt.
Vergere: The lost Jedi Vergere first appeared in the 2000 novel Rogue Planet, where she’s presumed missing after sending a cryptic message that is recovered by Obi-Wan Kenobi and a 12-year-old Anakin Skywalker in 29 B.B.Y. Vergere is captured by Yuuzhan Vong and turns to the dark side, later capturing and torturing Jacen Solo. Vergere is seen in Legacy flashbacks as a mentor to Krayt.
Force ghosts: In addition to Luke’s Jedi spirit, several Legends characters appear as force ghosts within Legacy, including Mara Jade, Darth Bane, and Darth Nihilus, who appear on the popular Legends planet Korriban.
The Vector Crossover: A crossover series that unified all of Dark Horse Star Wars comics into one narrative, Vector was a 12-part series that spanned Knights of The Old Republic (3963 B.B.Y.), Dark Times (19 B.B.Y.), Rebellion (0 A.B.Y.), and finally Legacy. The series explored the lifespan of the rogue Jedi Celeste Morne across over four millennia of Star Wars series.
Fate of the Jedi: Some of the last post-Return of the Jedi novels from the Legends canon and the last major series, the Fate of the Jedi books followed up where Legacy of the Jedi left off with the galaxy reeling from the death of Jacen Solo, who wrecked havoc as the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. Fate of the Jedi follows Luke and his son Ben as they search the galaxy for force-sensitive relics, including The Clone Wars planet Mortis. The final book in the series Apocalypse featured Darth Krayt, as Jedi and Sith join forces to face off against the chaotic force entity Abeloth.
The Fel Dynasty: As established in Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse, Jania Solo weds the Imperial Remnant leader Jagged Fel, establishing the peace between the Galactic Alliance and Imperial Remnant in Legacy. The Fel dynasty still exists in Legacy with Roan Fel fronting the New Empire.

Collector’s Spotlight

Legacy merchandise is always in high demand, as it was one of the most acclaimed Star Wars comics ever, and was followed up by two subsequent series. Legacy characters started appearing as comic book two-packs that bundled two characters with an issue of the series. Four packs were released featuring Cade Skywalker and Darth Talon, Darth Krayt and Sigel Dare, Deliah Blue and Darth Nihl (Entertainment Earth exclusive), and Imperial Knights Ganner Krieg and Antares Draco.




One of the coolest pieces is the 2009 Entertainment Earth exclusive “Joker Squad” pack which includes Legacy’s wisecracking Imperial squad and their Sith commander Darth Maleval. Hardcore fans may also note apperances of Legacy characters in the Miniatures tabletop games.
