Hey there, Rebelscum fans! This week on the site, we’re exploring one of the new animated series on Disney+, The Bad Batch. Make sure to read our “Expand Your Mind” article to read about how the series developed from an unfinished story reel to a full-on animated spinoff show of its own. Stay tuned throughout the week for more articles, insights, videos, and collector’s guides.

Of all the clone troopers within The Clone Wars, few have had a journey quite like Echo. Echo was first introduced in the season one episode “Rookies.” In the first episode of the series to focus solely on the clones, a group of inexperienced troopers are forced into a dangerous situation when their outpost is overrun by droids. Rex and Cody come to aid the young rookies, helping them take back the station. It’s one of the more emotionally impactful episodes of the show; of the original squad, only Echo and Fives survive. CT-1409 was given his nickname “Echo” based on his analytical mind and geeky nature.

Echo and Fives return in the third season, which took the show to the clones’ home planet of Kamino from Attack of the Clones. The prequel episode “Clone Cadets” showed the training process that clones underwent to prepare to be sent into the field, and showed the early training of the “Domino Squad” before they are dispatched to the outpost from “Rookies.” In the episode “ARC Troopers,” the Separatist forces invade Kamino, and Echo and Fives must return to protect their home planet. Due to their bravery in combat, both are elevated to the rank of “ARC Troopers” within the Republic Army.

Echo and Fives become prominent members of the 501st Legion, and clone friends with both Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex. They accompany Anakin, Rex, Obi-Wan, and Ashoka during a mission to break out Captain Tarkin and Jedi General Even Piell from the Seperatist stronghold “The Citadel.” In the thrilling escape, a detonation erupts near Echo, and he is presumed to be dead.

Echo’s death was followed by Fives’ own demise in the show’s sixth season; after uncovering the conspiracy to use the clones’ chips to activate Order 66, Fives is framed for an attempted assassination on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. However, during the “Bad Batch” storyline, Rex discovers that Echo is still alive. His semi-reconstructed body has been revived by the Seperatist leader Admiral Trench, who uses his mind to develop advanced battle strategies.

Echo is rescued throughout the adventure, and ultimately he decides to join the Bad Batch instead of returning to the 501st. Not only does he find himself out of place in his former legion considering his entire original squad has perished, but Echo’s unusual skillset make him a perfect fit for the idiosyncratic Bad Batch squad. In The Bad Batch series, Echo joins the elite clones Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, and Tech in their mercenary adventures following the Rise of the Empire.
