The casting call for The Phantom Menace spread like wildfire throughout Hollywood. Nearly every popular actor in Hollywood wanted a role in the upcoming Star Wars prequel. An entire generation had grown up with the original trilogy, and many prominent celebrities expressed their interest in joining the saga. Among the most vocal was Samuel L. Jackson, who admitted on several late night talk shows that he had wanted to join the saga.
Jackson was having a career high. He had a string of critically acclaimed performances behind him, earning praise for Do the Right Thing, Goodfellas, Jurassic Park, and Die Hard With A Vengeance. In 1994, Jackson’s performance in Quentin Tarantino’s game changing masterpiece Pulp Fiction earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Jackson was one of the biggest stars on the planet. Today, he’s still ranked as the single highest-grossing actor of all-time.
Lucas was charmed by Jackson’s passion, and agreed to cast him in the pivotal role of Yoda’s second-in-command. Windu’s wisdom is heralded in The Phantom Menace, but we finally saw him in action during the arena battle in Attack of the Clones. Jackson famously asked Lucas if he could have a purple lightsaber in order to distinguish himself. Windu slays Jango Fett and leads the charge against Dooku. He unfortunately meets his grim fate at the hands of Palpatine in an emotional turning point in Revenge of the Sith, where Anakin officially takes on the name Darth Vader.
However, Windu’s powers and abilities were further explored in the television shows. He had a starring role in the Star Wars: Clone Wars episode “Chapter 13.” After he loses his lightsaber in combat, Windu takes down an entire droid army with just his fists and the Force. Jackson returned to voice Windu in the theatrically released Star Wars: The Clone Wars film in 2008, but T.C. Carson provided his voice in the series. Windu has many starring episodes. In season one’s “Liberty of Ryloth,” he helps bridge a peace treaty between the Republic Senator Orn Free Taa and the resistance leader leader Cham Syndulla to save their planet from an invasion by Wat Tambor and the Techno Union.
Windu was a prominent character within the Republic series and Clone Wars multimedia project from 2002 to 2005. Michael Stover’s novel Shatterpoint explores Windu’s backstory when he travels back to his home planet of Haruun Kal. The planet is raged by a generational conflict called “The Summertime War.” This dark storyline was inspired by the classic war film Apocalypse Now and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
