Welcome back,
Rebelscum fans! This week on the site we’re taking a look at the Battle of Scarif, the climactic ground battle of
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that determined the fate of the Death Star plans. Make sure to check out our “
Expand Your Mind” article first to read about the film’s conception and why the Scarif assault is such a great sequence, but stay tuned throughout the week for more articles, insights, videos, and information about the best merchandising content.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was much different than all the other films in the saga, and not just because it lacked an opening crawl and didn’t focus on the Skywalker family. Director Gareth Edwards was inspired by World War II films like
Saving Private Ryan to craft a gritty war thriller in the galaxy far, far away. As a result, the Battle of Scarif is one of the bloodiest and most intense sequences in the entire saga. Check out our “Force Facts” below!
- It makes sense that Rogue One was inspired by World War II films, as classic war serials were one of George Lucas’s primary inspirations behind the classic trilogy, particularly the trench run sequence in A New Hope that homages The Battle of Britain.
- Before Felicity Jones was cast in the role of Jyn Erso, the acclaimed actresses Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, and Tatiana Maslany were all considered for the role.
- Although Solo: A Star Wars Story is the only other live-action A Star Wars Story to hit theaters, many were in various stages of development and were canceled, including Josh Trank’s scripted Boba Fett project and Guillermo del Toro’s pitch for a Jabba the Hutt film.
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first live-action film not to utilize a score by John Williams, although many of the same themes are brought back. The film was composed by Michael Giaccihino, who had previously worked with J.J. Abrams on Star Trek and Mission: Impossible III.
- Carrie Fisher was recreated using computer-generated imagery for the final scene, and she reportedly approved of the sequence. The film was released only two weeks prior to Fisher’s tragic death.
- Genevieve O'Reilly returned to play Mon Mothma. She first appeared in scenes that were deleted from Revenge of the Sith in which she plans the early stages of the Rebel Alliance with Bail Organa and Padme Amidala.
- During the Battle of Scarif, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director and producer Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have cameo appearances as Imperial officers.
- Saw Gerrera first appeared during a fifth season arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and he returned for both Star Wars: Rebels and The Bad Batch.
- The Guardians of the Whills references the mysterious Whills, which have been a part of George Lucas’s original concepts since the first draft of the original script in 1973.
- Darth Vader’s Mustafar castle was based on early concept art by Ralph McQuarrie that hails back to the original trilogy.
