The
Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon is a stand-alone event that runners do themselves on their own time. You can run it, walk it, skip it or do whatever you want to go the 13.1 mile distance anytime between January 1st and March 31st. Closer to the end of that date range, runDisney sends out an official finisher medal to all participants. I actually ran mine towards the end of March and have been waiting in anticipation for this to arrive. Also included in the box is an official finisher medal replica pin. Both items feature Chewbacca this year and are now starting to arrive across the US.
The
Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon is also the second part of the Kessel Run Challenge which was tied to this years
Star Wars Rival Run Weekend event and coincidentally, the 5th Anniversary was supposed to take place this very weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. Participants were to run the
Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon and the
Star Wars Rival Run Challenge (10k & Half Marathon) to complete the Kessel Run Challenge and receive a special bonus medal. Unfortunately, the second part of that was canceled due to the current virus situation. It looks like runDisney already had the boxes for the Virtual Half Marathon medals ready to go as mention of the invalid Kessel Run Challenge is featured prominently on the front.
Receiving this lone
Star Wars medal is a very welcomed sight for many runners since we've kind of gotten used to loading up on them every year for the last five years starting with the Inaugural
Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend which took place at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA back in 2015. Needless to say, I'll be counting down the days until we return to the Walt Disney World Resort in 2021 to complete the 5th Anniversary.
