With a population density of 2,800/km2 and a population of some eight and a half million, it is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. It is the fifth largest urban area in Europe after Istanbul, Moscow, London, and Paris. The Ruhr has one of the densest motorway networks in all of Europe, with dozens of Autobahns and similar expressways crossing the region.
