Panel Title: One Writer's Approach to Star Wars, Fri. 8/24/12, 7:30pm
Official Description: Writing in the Original Star Wars Trilogy 35 Years On, with Brian Wood and Randy Stradley.
This panel took place in the Star Wars University lecture hall with host Randy Stradley and author Brian Wood. A sparsely attended, but fascinating conversation with the editor and writer of the upcoming series entitled simply Star Wars. Without having any major objectives for the panel, Randy introduced Brian and his career and let him speak about his process and what drew him to the project.
Unlike standard panels where the guest speak for 40-50 minutes and then open the floor to questions, this one , in a University-style setting, was opened for questions from the several dozen audience members. Brian discussed things such as his style of writing, how he found the voices for the characters, and why he came back to work-for-hire writing rather than creator-owned material.
He also mentioned that he had written the first five issues of the series so far (the book will hit shelves in January 2013), and that none of the rumors about it were true. Dark Horse, and Brian, are not looking to trample on any continuity or "reboot" the franchise in any way. Jennifer Heddle, senior editor at Lucasfilm, who happened to be sitting in the audience, also let fans know that she was making sure that this work fits into the existing continuity while maintaining a fresh outlook on the characters and events shortly after the events of A New Hope.
