Hey there, Rebelscum fans! Star Wars gamers, rejoice. This week on the site, we’ll be looking back at one of the most critical gaming franchises within the galaxy far, far away: the beloved Jedi Knight series. We’ll be exploring our ‘90s nostalgia today with our “Expand Your Mind,” but stay tuned throughout the week for more content. We’ll be updating you with additional articles, insights, videos, and information about all the best merchandising content you’ll want to keep your eyes out for.

Star Wars was booming again throughout the ‘90s. Dark Empire became the first in the Dark Horse comic series, Heir to the Empire launched a new wave of Expanded Universe novels, and Lucasfilm was ramping up for the release of the Special Editions and The Phantom Menace. Gaming was also on the rise, and the Jedi Knight series finally gave players the chance to participate in a more narrative driven Star Wars game.

It may get a little confusing looking back at the history of the series, so we’re going to break down all the individual games for fans looking back on old memories and any new players who are interested in trying these games out for the first time.

  • Dark Forces (1995) - The first installment in the series introduced the new hero Kyle Katarn, a mercenary who works for the Rebel Alliance to uncover a secret Imperial project to create Dark Troopers. Dark Forces takes place during the battle to get the Death Star plans shortly before A New Hope.

  • Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (1997) - The sequel picks up with Katarn’s adventures in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor, in which he joins the New Republic and learns that his father was slain by a Dark Jedi. Katarn advances his Force powers and searches for the “Valley of the Jedi.”

  • Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (1998) - The expansion pack to Dark Forces II expanded the story by including the fan favorite Mara Jade as Katarn’s Jedi apprentice. The pair of former Imperials search for a mysterious ancient Sith temple.

  • Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (2002) - In the aftermath of the Dark Forces series, Katarn had severed his connection to the Force. In Jedi Outcast, he’s forced to adopt his Jedi ways once more in order to stop the Dark Jedi Desann who is attempting to revitalize the Empire.

  • Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (2003) - Katarn was replaced with a new protagonist, Jaden Korr, who trains as Katarn’s apprentice at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy. Jaden hunts down the dark side alliance of the Disciples of Ragnos.
