Hey there,
Rebelscum fans! We’re continuing our exploration of the Dark Horse comic series with a look at the
Rebellion run this week. To learn about the series’s origins, make sure to check out our “
Expand Your Mind” article detailing its history. Catch up on more content from this week, including
Bobby’s awesome videos, a “
Character Profile” on Luke’s ally Deena Shan, and a “
Timeline Breakdown” connecting
Rebellion to other
Star Wars Legends material.
Rebellion explores the three year gap between
A New Hope and
The Empire Strikes Back, where a newly empowered Rebel Alliance gains their largest support yet following the destruction of the Death Star. As the events have been in canon since 1977, many books, comics, and games within
Star Wars Legends have chronicled this exciting period. Check out our “Force Facts” trivia on the Galactic Civil War.
- The first Star Wars Expanded Universe novel Splinter of the Mind’s Eye was planned by George Lucas as a potential low budget film if Star Wars bombed at the box office in 1977. Lucas had author Alan Dean Foster not include Han Solo (as Harrison Ford was not contracted for a sequel) and delete a space battle that would have been two expensive to shoot.
- Splinter of the Mind’s Eye finally got a comic book adaptation nearly twenty years after its initial publication, as writer Terry Austin tackled the adaptation in 1995.
- The rebel base on Yavin IV was actually the site of the ancient Sith Lord Exar Kun’s temple. Kun’s evil spirit returned to haunt Anakin Solo when Luke returned to build his Jedi Academy on the moon.
- Wedge Antilles has a slightly confusing onscreen credit, as actor Colin Higgins was originally cast and then fired during production. Actual Wedge actor Denis Lawson is the uncle of none other than Ewan McGregor.
- The Star Wars Holiday Special, the only live-action project set during the era, prominently featured deleted scenes and leftover footage compiled from existing reels of A New Hope. Of course, if Disney could actually release it for fans to see….
- Want to read about the early exploits of Mara Jade when she was part of the Emperor’s assassins? Timothy Zahn’s Choices of One shows an early encounter between her and Darth Vader.
- The six-part young adult series Rebel Force featured the reappearance of Feris Olin from the Jedi Quest books. Olin was a rival apprentice to Anakin who chose to leave the Jedi Order.
- Wampas were pretty active on Hoth prior to the establishment of the new rebel case. The Star Wars Tales issue “Hoth” is the rare Wampa-centric adventure.
- Lando wins his leadership role on Cloud City by his usual sabacc means in the Star Wars Tales issue “Lady Luck.”
- The MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies set within the era features many storylines considered part of the Legends canon, as cutscenes within the expansion packs. Obviously, player-led adventures are not.
