For anyone growing up in the UK during the late Seventies and early Eighties, Top Trumps was a rite of passage and kids would typically spend many hours comparing statistics from a wide variety of topics such as battleships, wild animals, cars and a whole lot more.

Comprising a deck of cards, with each containing multiple categories of numerical data, each player tries to outdo, or "trump" their opponents and win their cards by selecting their best stat on each card, with the overall winner being the one that can win the whole deck.

Following a relaunch of the game in 1999, Star Wars packs were introduced to the line, covering both the original and prequel trilogies, starships, The Clone Wars and more besides, including more recently Star Wars Rebels.

With the brand branching out to other countries, the products on offer have expanded from the basic deck of cards, albeit the core game mechanics remain the same.

Two such examples from the Star Wars line are the Death Star collectible tin and the Top Trumps tournament set. The latter consists of "the hub", six packs of cards, six scoreboards and a collection of pegs. Players take it in turns to spin the dial in the centre of the hub to determine which style of mini-game to play, such as Hi-Lo, Head-to-Head and Shoot Out. So while all of the packs feature different categories, each mini-game involves an individual set to allow like-for-like comparisons, with pegs being awarded to the winner. Once a player wins nine pegs, they choose a pack to play the final round that comprises a more-traditional game, with each player having as many cards as they had pegs.

Suitable for young readers up, each card features a photo, a brief description, and in the statistics, lots of little tidbits to add an extra dimension to what you might already know about the Star Wars universe.

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens-related product coming in the next little while, there will undoubtedly be more ways to play a game that is a fun way to help pass the time while also being yet another thing for collectors to add to their collections.
