What Shane had to say:
I've teased it, I've hinted at it and now I can finally talk about it! Announcing The Force in the Flesh Volume I 10th Anniversary Edition and Retrospective Kickstarter! Live May 1st!
In 2007 we published a book that defied genres; a book that shone a light on a niche subculture within two already niche subcultures: Star Wars fandom and tattooing. It's hard to believe but at the time, the subject was nowhere near as mainstream as it is today. As a result, the book influenced an entire generation of tattoo artists and brought the subculture of Star Wars tattoos to the prominent forefront of fandom they now occupy.
Through brilliant photos and biographies of over 40 collectors and artists, The Force in the Flesh: Star Wars Inspired Body Art was a stunning, self-published hardcover art book of unparalleled quality. It proved so popular that it sold out in a few short years and spawned a sequel volume that was released in 2015.
As both volumes were 100% self-published, funded and distributed, quantities of these books were limited and Volume I is now long out of print. One of the questions we're asked the most is "where can I get a copy?" Sadly, the answer is nowhere.
By reprinting Volume I in a 10th Anniversary Edition we hope to satisfy that demand for both old and new fans of the series. So what exactly have we come up with? Well, we're glad you asked! Our 10th Anniversary Edition plans include the following:
-10th Anniversary reprint of Volume I featuring a brand new cover by tattoo artist Adam Hays. This new cover matches the style and theme he created for Volume II and what we're currently developing for the release of Volume III in 2021. Volume I comes in at 200 pages and measures 9"x11" with a debossed hardcover and flood varnished pages.
-A 10th Anniversary softcover retrospective. This approximately 75 page book will feature interviews with 15 artists and collectors originally featured in Volume I, ten years on, and bring us up to speed on what they've been up to - and trust us, some of it is pretty awesome!
-A 10th Anniversary slipcase for both Volumes I and II.
Measuring 9"x11" with a debossed hardcover and flood varnished pages, our books have come to be known for being of exceptionally high quality. They are big and beautiful. Self-publishing art books of this caliber also means they are expensive to produce. To help reach our goal of $25,000 Canadian (roughly $19,000 'Merican dollars) we have a put together an incredible selection of rewards including exclusive items and some long out-of-print collectibles and publications we've been a part of creating.
Whether this is your first time seeing our publications or are long-time fans, there's something for everyone here. So jump in with both feet and get it all or pick and choose what works you! Either way, we thank you for supporting us.
