I sense much fear in you Rebel Scum. Who remembers back when this trailer dropped about 6 months before Episode I was released? I remember Entertainment Tonight debuted the trailer on TV and I recorded it on a VHS tape and watched it over and over for days on end. On the internet, StarWars.com had a link to view the trailer In Glorious Quicktime™, as was the custom at the time. How many hours of dial up speed internet did it take to achieve the more than 1 million downloads within the first 24 hours of the trailer's release?
So many awesome memories are associated with this trailer for me. Think what you will about everything that has come after the original trilogy, but the lead up to Episode I was nothing but sheer excitement and positivity in the Star Wars community. It's hard to compete with the hype of the unknown. In this trailer we get our first look at young puppet Yoda, podracers, battle droids, Naboo, a whole host of new Jedi characters, and of course Darth Maul with his brain-melting ignition of his double-bladed lightsaber, all set to music from the original trilogy. We hadn't even learned the full title or experienced the Duel of the Fates music yet.
In recognition of the films 25th anniversary, the official Star Wars Youtube channel has released a 4K remaster of the original trailer. Check it out here and relive the original excitement we all felt when we saw it for the first time.
