Hey there,
Rebelscum fans! It’s
The Mandalorian week on the site, and we’re finally talking about the acclaimed Disney+ series that’s pleasing fans new and old alike. Make sure to check out our “
Expand Your Mind” base article to hear about the show’s development and history, but we have more Mando content planned. Our “Character Profile” will spotlight one of our favorite characters, our “Force Casting” will look at how we want to see the series continue, and
our videos throughout the week will expand on these topic areas and provide insights on the merchandising available.
The Mandalorian didn’t just open up the potential of
Star Wars on television to a larger audience, but it gave a new distribution method: Disney+. Without the barriers of a network provider, Disney’s premiere streaming service allowed for a free flow of
Star Wars content, and they needed a flagship show to launch the new service. Eventually Marvel shows
WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and
Loki made their way to the platform, but the premiere of
The Mandalorian accompanied the service’s launch.
The state of returning to movie theaters is in flux as a result of both COVID-19 and the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock. We also don’t know a whole lot about what Disney has planned for the future of the
Star Wars films, as although a lot of projects have been in development, but other than 2023’s
Rogue Squadron none have been dated. We’ll be in no shortage of
Star Wars shows to look forward to, so we’ve gathered a preview of all the ones coming up.
- Visions (2021) - In just a few short weeks, we’ll be getting this animated anime series set outside of the core canon. The stories explores nine short stories told from some of the leading Japanese animation studios.
- The Book of Boba Fett (2021) - Temurara Morrison made his much-anticipated return to the Star Wars universe during the second season of The Mandalorian, and the season’s stinger set up Boba Fett as the new godfather of Jabba the Hutt’s Tatooine palace. His post-Return of the Jedi adventures will be explored in Robert Rodriguez’s highly anticipated spinoff.
- The Bad Batch: Season Two (2022) - Disney+ was kind enough to not only grant Dave Filoni a proper conclusion to The Clone Wars, but an acclaimed spinoff that explored the motley group of advanced clones that appeared in the final season. Reception was strong for the first round of The Bad Batch and it was renewed for a second season.
- The Mandalorian: Season Three (2022) - So is that the last time Mando and Grogu will see each other, or is Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy more open to family visits? We’ll have to wait and see, but the third season of The Mandalorian is in pre-production.
- Andor (2022) - Diego Luna’s rebel spy from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may be cut off from having any future adventures, but this spinoff will explore his early days in the rebellion. Cassian hinted that he’s been fighting the Empire since he was six years old, so it should be interesting to see how he became involved with the Rebel Alliance.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) - Ever since the announcement of Disney’s Lucasfilm purchase, fans have been begging and pleading for a future film or series starring Ewan McGregor. McGregor makes his highly anticipated return in this six-part miniseries, and as a bonus, his prequel companion Hayden Christensen will be joining him.
- The Acolyte (2023) - If you’ve seen Russian Doll, you know Lesley Hedland is a talented storyteller whose creative worldbuilding will be a natural fit for the Star Wars universe. The showrunner’s Star Wars series will take place in The High Republic era, the current setting of a current interconnected series of novels, comics, YA books, audio projects, and shorts set 200 years before the core saga.
- Ahsoka (????) - Rosario Dawson’s standout performance as the beloved Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian’s second season delivered on the live-action depiction that fans had cautiously anticipated. We know that Ahsoka is searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn, but the other supporting characters and production timetable haven’t been unveiled.
- Lando (????) - Other than the name of the series and the attachment of Dear White People creator Justin Simien, we don’t know a whole lot about this spinoff. We’d only expect that Lucasfilm is trying to get Donald Glover to reprise his role after his acclaimed performance in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
