With the announcement that Obi-Wan Kenobi is coming to our TV screens in a year or so, the venerable Jedi Knight has had a lot of focus on him and LEGO was quick to capitalise with the addition of a series of new sets that almost reflects the three act structure of Obi-Wan's life.

75269 Duel on Mustafar

In the exposition - also known as The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones - that makes up the bulk of the first act - we witness Obi-Wan Kenobi's rise from Padawan to Jedi Knight to Master and then, finally, his inclusion on the Jedi Council, while the young Anakin Skywalker goes through his own apprenticeship and faces his own trials until their diverging philosophies lead them to cross lightsabers.

Through deceitful manipulation and a carefully spun web of lies, the headstrong Anakin is convinced that the Jedi are trying to subvert the Galactic Senate and have attempted to assassinate the Supreme Chancellor, who is, unknown to Anakin, Darth Sideous. This is the catalyst for Anakin's fall to the Dark Side and his becoming Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith and the sworn enemy of the Jedi.

Chief amongst the betrayers is Obi-Wan Kenobi who, on the fiery world of Mustafar, attempts to reconcile with his fallen apprentice. This confrontation comes to a head during a Duel on Mustafar (75269), and ends with the near demise of Darth Vader.

Only twice before - in 7257 Ultimate Lightsaber Duel and 9494 Anakin's Jedi Starfighter - has the climactic duel between stricken master and misled apprentice been depicted in LEGO bricks. And sadly this confrontation that closes the first act of Obi-Wan Kenobi's life doesn't muster the excitement that Revenge of the Sith delivered.


When constructing a set it's always good to know what is being built; for example while putting the similar 75236 Duel On Starkiller Base together it was obvious what was the bedrock, fiery chasm, snow layer or trees. The same can't be said for a large part of this build because the first bag, which consists of the lava flow, is confusing and alien to the eye and the hand. Lacking any normal points of reference it isn't a particularly enjoyable phase of the assembly. Unfortunately the second bag does't add much to the experience either. The two hovering droid platforms, a large energy vane and a small lava fall don't contain interesting details or portray any enticment to play.

After the success of 75236 Duel On Starkiller Base it's a shame this model - which is neither a vignette or a playset - didn't hit the same level of accuracy or entertainment.


Following this final bout Darth Vader is left to die on the edge of the pahoehoe lava flow, eventually rescued by his master Darth Sideous who allowed the to Darth Vader Transformation (75183) from man to machine.

75270 Obi-Wan's Hut

The second act in the Tale of Obi-Wan Kenobi sees the downtrodden Jedi facing a galaxy of turbulence and disorder - at least from a certain point of view - and, knowing that one of the Skywalker twins will need his proection and tutelage, he opts to go into hiding on Tatooine (leaving the other child in the capable and powerful hands of a prominent Senator who is quietly organising a resistance to the New Order while vocally protesting the loss of liberty and justice that the galaxy now faces).

With his plans thwarted by Luke's guardian, who won't allow the Jedi-in-hiding anywhere near the child, Obi-Wan isn't able to educate the boy and instead is forced observe from a distance. Biding his time for nearly twenty years, his patience is rewarded by a series of fortunate events that leads Luke, who is questioning the direction his life is taking, practically to the doorstep of Obi-Wan's Hut (75270), and succesfully ending the retired Jedi Master's lonely existance on the edge of the Jundland Wastes. Luke's arrival with an important message carried by R2-D2 drives Obi-Wan forward in an attempt to right the wrongs he enabled in the first act.

Though we have already enjoyed the swampy tree-root that formed Yoda's Hut (75208) and the Jedi Island Training (75200) hideout of the last Jedi, this hermitage has been a long time coming.


The set is a quick and easy build, and contains so many hidden treats that the instruction book is the kind of page turner George -arr-arr-martin wishes he could still write. At no point does the construction drag, and with each step the adobe abode rises out of the sand.

Combining all the important elements of Old Ben's remote lifestyle, this unfold-to-open domicile includes a stack of details that brings this reclusive Jedi Master's domicile to life, including a small kitchen with a small stove, a table setting forone, complete with Tatooine's favourite beverage and the pivotal lightsaber that drives Luke's destiny.


Having digested the plea for help delivered in the form of a tiny, shimmering princess, Obi-Wan and Luke decide that - at the close of the second act - taking the droids to the royal house of Organa on Alderaan is the next step in their hero's journey. Though at this point we don't know if it is the naieve knave or the wizard-like veteran who will lead us through the quest, and the third and final act of Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story.

75246 Death Star Cannon

The means to reach the final outcome and resolve the tangled relationship between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan can only occur in a final and climactic showdown. Taking place in the Empire's greatest stronghold, a floating castle that contains a weapon that such power that is able to reduce planets to rubble like dragon's breathe can decimate the stone defenses of a castle, Obi-Wan misleads the pursuit in order to help the heroes - the clueless youth and the jaded criminal - retrieve the captured princess from her dungeon cell.

While negotiating the chasm that surrounds the tractor beam controls, Obi-Wan is faced with a dilemma - risk using the Force to distract the Imperial forces manning the nearby Death Star Cannon (75246) or fail to disable the power source that is preventing the departure of the Millennium Falcon.

Let any fan play out exciting LEGO Star Wars: A New Hope moments with this 75246 Death Star Cannon playset. This is a set in two parts: the turbolaser is a stripped down version of 75034 Death Star Troopers from 2014, which came with two Imperial Gunners and a pair of Royal Guard minifigures alongside the Death Star laser cannon, but the tractor beam controls a new addition to the Death Star environment, as is the head piece and torso print of the Obi-Wan Kenobi minifigure.


Aside from changing out the flick missile to spring-loaded missiles, and the new Imperial Gunner helmet element the main difference is the lack of a seat. First the handrail at the primary ignition control and now turbolaser gunner's seats are being strippedout. What is it with Imperial procurement that they can't afford their rank and file some basic conveniences?

On the otherhand the tractor beam control is a lesson in less-is-more; with the narrow walkway and precarious positioning of minifigure feet it is easy to imagine the depths that Obi-Wan would fall to if he tripped on his Jedi robe. The tractor beam control lacks a lot in play value but the "working" tractorbeam control that lowers the tractor beam is a delightful feature.


Ultimately it is Obi-Wan's use of the Force that alerts Darth Vader - who is already keenly aware there is a significant Force presence aboard the space station - leading to the climax and Obi-Wan sacrificing himself so that the rest of the party can escape.
