Hey there, Rebelscum readers! This week in our coverage of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, we’re looking at the highly influential Star Wars Dark Horse comic book series Republic. Stay tuned for more Republic coverage throughout the week. With our “Timeline Breakdown” we looked at the connections to other Star Wars media, and in our “Force Casting” we’ll look at how the stories could be adapted as a potential television or film project. Make sure to keep up to date with Bobby’s breakdown videos to learn about the coolest Republic merchandise and learn additional information.

Today in our “Character Profile,” we’re spotlighting the fearsome bounty hunter Aurra Sing. Sing made a brief cameo in The Phantom Menace overseeing the podrace, but it was enough to spark the imagination of Star Wars Expanded Universe writers. Many fans may know her from her prominent appearance in The Clone Wars. Sing was an integral member of Cad Bane’s team, and later popped up as a mentor to young Boba Fett and an assassin that haunted the dreams of Ashoka Tano.

However, Sing’s story was prominently explored throughout the run of Republic. In the very second Republic storyline Outlander, Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi travels to Tatooine in search of the Jedi Master Shared Hett. Hett has abandoned the Jedi Order and become a Tusken Raider, raising his son A’Shared in the same culture. Mundi goes to inform him of Qui-Gon Jinn’s death and the return of the Sith, but during their journey Sing appears as a foe to them both.

Sing was trained as a Jedi after growing up in the poor streets of Nar Shadda. Sing survived abandonment and slavery, and was taken in by the Jedi Order. Although the pensive Jedi Master known as the Dark Woman attempted to train her, Sing found the austere Jedi was not the parental figure she sought. After a series of kidnappings shook her relationship with the Jedi, Sing abandoned the Order and took up a profession as a Jedi Hunter and for-hire assassin.

Sing became known for her cruelty, and in Outlander she brutally slays the elder Hett, who gives Mundi permission to train his son A’Shared as a Jedi and take him to Coruscant; A’Shared would fight throughout the Clone Wars, but later turn to the dark side and become Legacy’s main antagonist Darth Krayt. The hunt for Sing became a priority for the Jedi Council, and in the years leading up to the Clone Wars the Jedi Quinlan Vos meticulously hunted Sing across the galaxy.

During the Clone Wars, Sing allied herself with the Separatists and became one of Count Dooku’s commanders. She later reappeared as an agent of the Empire following the Jedi Purge, and helped Darth Vader search for the Jedi survivor Jax Pavan. Sing’s unknown species could survive incredible lengths, and she reappeared nearly forty years after Return of the Jedi to hunt down Jacen Solo’s wife Tenel Ka and their daughter, Allana.

Sing’s Force abilities weren’t delved into deeply within The Clone Wars, but she was skilled with a lightsaber and claimed the lives of many Jedi. Her unique combination of Dark Jedi and bounty hunter made her one of the coolest villains in the Star Wars comics, and Republic explored the depths of her damaged psyche.
