“But Uncle Owen!” Luke whines throughout his introductory scenes of
A New Hope. A lot of young adults could relate to Mark Hamill’s existential musings in the opening moments of the first film. He seemingly wanted to go on grand adventures throughout the galaxy, but he’s forced to stay home on Tatooine with his relatively dull adopted guardians. Little does Luke know that Uncle Owen’s strict concern is actually merited; he’s trying to protect his nephew from falling down the same dark path that his father did. When Luke brings up the idea of visiting a “Ben Kenobi,” Owen dismisses him.
The death of Owen and Beru Lars is one of the most shocking moments in the entire saga (and surprisingly violent for a PG rated film). Luke has his first experience with tragedy, and realizes that he will never be the same wholesome teenager ever again. Owen and Beru are unfortunate casualties of the larger events of the galaxy. The early moments where Luke interacts with his Aunt and Uncle show a causal sense of decency that is so rare in the Outer Rim.
Phil Brown played Owen Lars in
A New Hope. Although he was living in England during the time of
A New Hope’s production, Brown was cast for his strong American accent. Lucas compared the character of Owen to the unseen parental figures in his previous film,
American Graffiti. Brown wrote, directed, and starred in many U.K. productions before he returned to the United States in 1993. He frequently appeared at
Star Wars Celebrations and fan events. In 2002, Brown attended
Star Wars Celebration II. He got to meet Joel Edgerton, who had been cast as Owen in
Attack of the Clones.
Edgerton has had an amazing career trajectory since his first appearance in the
Star Wars franchise. An Australian actor, Edgerton was cast in
Attack of the Clones in the early stages of his career. However, he has become one of the greatest character actors of his generation in the past twenty years. Edgerton delivered phenomenal performances in films such as
Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby, Life, Black Mass, Midnight Special, Loving, It Comes At Night, The King, and
The Green Knight. Edgerton also began a career behind the camera, earning critical acclaim for his directorial efforts
The Gift and
Boy Erased. He received a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for his performance in Barry Jenkins’ historical miniseries
The Underground Railroad. It is exciting to see an actor whose career launched with
Star Wars return to his origins.
