Hello,
Rebelscum fans! It’s time to learn a little bit of Shyriiwook, because this week we’re taking a trip to the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk. Chewbacca’s home planet has been a part of the
Star Wars universe since the much derided
The Star Wars Holiday Special premiered in 1978. Stay tuned throughout the week for more articles, insights, videos, and information on all the best merchandising content that you’ll want to add to your collection.
Revenge of the Sith finally gave us an entire planet filled with Wookiees. Yoda tells the Jedi Council that he has “good relations” with the Wookiees, and decides to personally lead the defense of Kashyyyk against the droid army. Kashyyyk is a pivotal point in the hyperspace routes that the Republic cannot lose. Yoda is joined by a ground of Wookiee resistance fighters, including Chewbacca. The film also introduced Chewie’s cousin, Tarfful, who helps transport Yoda to a secret escape pod after Order 66.
Michael Kingma played Tarfful in
Revenge of the Sith. The film reused some of Itchy’s voice from
The Star Wars Holiday Special when Tarfful solemnly bids farewell to Yoda. Although Tarfful’s adventures in the Expanded Universe are somewhat limited, he was frequently featured in the
Episode III marketing campaign. Several Wookiee-themed tie-in products were launched.
Tarfful made his return to the canon in the season finale of
Star Wars: The Clone Wars season three, titled “Wookie Hunt.” Ashoka Tano has been kidnapped by the Trandoshans, who track down prisoners for sport. However, they make the unwise decision to kidnap Chewbacca. Chewie and Ashoka team up to free their fellow prisoners. A group of Wookiees, led by Chewbacca, pop up at the last minute to rescue their friend.
Tarfful first appeared in the video game
Republic Commando in events that took place shortly before the Battle of Kashyyyk. Tarfful and a few Wookiee leaders are captured by the Separatists, and Delta Squad comes to his rescue. Delta Squad remains on Kashyyyk throughout the war. Karen Traviss’ novel
Order 66 explores the battle from their point-of-view.
In the
Star Wars: Clone Wars tie-in comic, Tarfful and Chewbacca help organize the Wookiee’s defense of Kashyyyk prior to the invasion. Tarfful’s activities after the rise of the Empire are relatively unknown. James Luceno’s novel
Dark Lord reveals that like many Wookiees, Tarfful was enslaved by the Empire, and forced to become a laborer on the construction of the First Death Star.
What do you think,
Rebelscum fans? Are you hoping for more Tarfful stories in the future? What are some of your favorite Wookiee moments from
Revenge of the Sith?
