JAKKS Pacific invited us to participate in their Ask JAKKS program, and we've received the answers to our first set of questions.
RS: What has been the decision-making process in deciding which characters to make, and in which size to do them?
JAKKS: With all of the JAKKS BIG FIGS SW lines, we tend to look first at whom the most popular characters are and who resonates with kids and collectors. When it comes to oversized figures we trend to trend a bit more towards masked characters (although that is NOT a 100% rule) as the characters with masks tend to do better when blown up to large size. Luckily we have some of the world’s biggest Star Wars action figure fans working on the brand and we spend a ton of time on the fan sites seeing whom fans are talking about. In the end, the goal is to make figures that are fun, and will be popular with kids, moms and collectors.
RS: You mentioned in the Toy Innovators panel at Star Wars Celebration the idea of doing accessories, to provide items such as Boba Fett’s blaster (I’d like to put in for Chewbacca’s bowcaster too). How likely is that, and if it were to happen, would it be something that would be sold in stores, or might you do it as a mail-in offer?
JAKKS: Any of the above might be possible (in terms of a distribution channel to get these accessories out). Essentially we are always trying, it just takes the right factors to line up, such as a retailer or retailers interested in taking an item like this. But definitely not off the table.
RS: Are you able to say anything about product for The Force Awakens?
JAKKS: Sorry, but we can’t comment on The Force Awakens product at this time.
RS: Will you be doing another exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con this year?
JAKKS: Yes, in addition to our awesome First Public Appearance Boba Fett sold at the JAKKS booth in the Lucas Pavillion, we will also have two more BIG FIG items sold at the Entertainment Earth booth which will be revealed in the next few weeks. (although they are not necessarily Star Wars related which we know is the focus of your site).
RS: Are there any characters that you would like to do, that you know just aren’t going to be possible?
JAKKS: A lot of members of the team are big fans of background characters like cantina aliens, Rebel Pilots and Imperial Officers. It is not that they are off the table or not possible, but it takes locking in a retailer who will support the quota needed per figure to tackle characters that do not have speaking rolls, or limited speaking rolls. But we are always trying!
