Hey there, Rebelscum fans! Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones celebrates its 20th anniversary this summer. This week, we’re looking at the epic arena battle during the film’s conclusion. We’ll be celebrating the second film in the prequel trilogy all week on the site, so make sure to check out all of the articles, insights, videos, and merchandising content we’ll be adding!

It’s amazing to think that it's been ten years since Attack of the Clones hit theaters. While some would rank Attack of the Clones lower in their rankings of the saga, there has been considerable reapplication for all of the prequels in the last few years. Check out our Force Facts on the film.

  • Although Attack of the Clones was groundbreaking with its use of digital filmmaking techniques, the sequel trilogy returned to the classic film style of the original trilogy. Lucas discussed his preference for digital over film in the documentary Side by Side.

  • The entire “droid factory” sequence where Anakin and Padme battle through the catacombs of Geonosis was a last minute addition added after post-production.

  • One of the guidebooks for Attack of the Clones revealed that Eeth Koth had perished during the explosion of a Republic Gunship. A similar looking character, Agen Kolar, was introduced in Revenge of the Sith. However, Filoni decided to revitalize Koth for The Clone Wars episode “Grievous Intrigue.”

  • Samuel L. Jackson famously asked for a purple lightsaber in order to distinguish himself. Ironically, a Mace Windu action figure with a blue lightsaber had already been established in The Phantom Menace toyline. The exclusive figure was one of the first preview items released in 1998.

  • Count Dooku watches the events unfold from above, but it certainly didn’t indicate anything about Christopher Lee’s combat abilities. Lee has performed more sword fights than any other actor. A digital projection of Lee’s face was given to his stunt double for the duel with Yoda at the end of the film.

  • The Geonosian arena was based off of the Roman Coliseum. Greek and Roman mythology and philosophy were among the primary influences on the original trilogy.

  • “Who wants a Reek sandwich?” Anakin quips in the Hasbro tie-in line.

  • If you managed to keep a hold of the original Attack of the Clones DVD release, you can check out the short mockumentary R2-D2: Beneath the Dome. The 22-minute short pokes fun at R2’s “secret double life” as an actor.

  • A famous rumored started that the boy band *NYSNC would make appearances in the battle as background Jedi. Reportedly, Lucas’ daughters had personally requested it from their father. Although this eventually did not lead to any developments, Saturday Night Live poked fun at the idea with an Attack of the Clones themed sketch.

  • A limited vinyl edition of the Attack of the Clones soundtrack was released in 2016.
