Hey there, Rebelscum fans! This week on the site we’re fighting to destroy the Death Star by exploring the Battle of Yavin from A New Hope. Make sure to check out our “Expand Your Mind” article to hear about why it's one of the most iconic sequences in the history of the franchise, but stay tuned throughout the week for more articles, insights, videos, and information about the best merchandising that collectors should be looking for.

The Battle of Yavin is one of the pivotal moments in the entire franchise, changing the course of the Galactic Civil War by spreading word of the Rebellion’s victory. Check out our “Force Facts” here.

  • The Battle of Yavin was one of the first sequences that George Lucas tested out in 3D when there were plans to rerelease the first six films. The 3D A New Hope has never been screened. Lucas also added CGI additions to the battle in the 1997 special edition, the 2004 DVD release, and the 2011 Blu-Ray.

  • The site of Yavin IV serves as the base for the Rebels and Luke’s New Jedi Order, but it has connections to the Sith past. The Sith force ghost of the ancient Sith Lord Exar Kun from the Tales of the Jedi comic threatens Anakin Solo in the Junior Jedi Knight books.

  • In the Expanded Universe it is shown how Vader discovers the identity of the pilot that destroyed the Death Star. It's explained that in the Star Wars galaxy, Skywalker is a very common last name.

  • Y-Wings aren’t exclusive to the Galactic Civil War era. Clone pilots fly Y-Wing ships during the Battle for the Malevolence in the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

  • Scenes involving Darth Vader speaking to Imperial officers on the bridge of the Death Star were actually reused for The Star Wars Holiday Special. James Earl Jones recorded new dialogue to fit the special’s Life Day narrative.

  • Although it's a victorious moment for the Rebellion, there were also innocent lives aboard the Death Star. The Legends novel Death Star explores the perspective of various employees who make up the planet-sized vessel’s infrastructure.

  • Garick Hagon plays Biggs Darklighter during A New Hope, but most of his scenes were cut from the final film. Biggs is Luke’s best friend on Tatooine and plans to join the Imperial Academy, before defecting to the Rebellion. These scenes are viewable on the 2011 Blu-Ray.

  • The destruction of Red Squadron led to the development of the new Rogue Squadron. Lucasfilm announced that the next live-action Star Wars film will be titled Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and will be directed by Wonder Woman filmmaker Patty Jenkins. The film was originally scheduled to be released in December 2023, but with production being delayed, that release date looks doubtful.

  • The 2016 LEGO Death Star is one of the biggest LEGO Star Wars sets of all-time, featuring 4,016 pieces. The top spot goes to UCS Millenium Falcon with 7,451.

  • Chewbacca finally gets the medal from the Rebel Alliance awards ceremony in The Rise of Skywalker.
