Hey there,
Rebelscum fans! This week on the site we’re looking at the Battle of Yavin, the iconic space battle that changed the course of
Star Wars history through the major victory for the Rebel Alliance. Make sure to read our “
Expand Your Mind” section to read about why it's such a critical sequence, but stay tuned throughout the week for more articles, insights, videos, and information on the best merchandising available for collectors.
Although it's one of the most inspirational moments in the saga, the Battle of Yavin is also a site of tragedy where nearly the entire Rebel space crew is killed. In the aftermath of the battle, Luke and Wedge Antilles reform the Rebel pilots into an expert group of pilots that can fly anything from X-Wings to Snowspeeders. This new team, named Rogue Squadron, makes their screen debut in the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, but the team would go on to have many adventures in the Expanded Universe. Here are some of their best moments.
- Star Wars: X-Wing - Rogue Squadron (comic series) - In 1995, Dark Horse comics began the 35 issue run of comics focused on Rogue Squadron. Set almost immediately after the Battle of Endor, the series focused on Wedge Antilles and a new batch of Rebel heroes that make up the team, as well as returning heroes like Wes Janson and Tycho Celcho.
- Star Wars: X-Wing - Rogue Leader (comic series) - In 2005, this comic series served as a prequel to the core X-Wing - Rogue Squadron series and focused on Luke Skywalker’s adventures. During the New Republic era, Wedge assumed command of the team when Luke began the New Jedi Order.
- Star Wars: X-Wing (novel series) - Exploring similar events, the X-Wing novel series by Aaron Allston and Michael A. Stackpole was described as the “Top Gun of the Star Wars universe." The series begins two years after Return of the Jedi, and shows how Wedge and his team contribute to the new Battle of Coruscant when the newly formed New Republic takes control of the capital. This event is chronicled in the first four novels Rogue Squadron, Wedge’s Gamble, The Kryptos Trap, and The Bacta War.
- Following the battle, Wedge decides to expand the team into Wraith Squadron to remain exclusive to commando pilots who have the ability to fly any vehicle. Wraith Squadron would be the focus of the next novels Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist, Solo Command, Isgard’s Revenge, and Starfighter of Adumar and extend out to 13 A.B.Y. The books were released from 1996 to 1999.
- Allston finally debuted a new novel Mercy Kill in 2012 that picked up years later in 44 A.B.Y., where the original team members and a new generation cope with the state of the galaxy in the wake of Jacen Solo’s reign as Darth Caedus.
- Star Wars: X-Wing (video games) - The simulation game X-Wing debuted in 1993 and explored the events of the Battle of Yavin from Luke’s perspective. The follow up TIE Fighter was released in 1994 and let you take flight for the glory of the Empire. The single and multiplayer game X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter launched in 1997, and X-Wing - Alliance debuted in 1999.
